Mercy Hospital Chapel—commonly known as Holy Family Chapel—is the Catholic chapel at Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego in Hillcrest. Completed and opened in September 2001, it was designed as a multicultural, interfaith place of worship for patients, families, staff, and visitors while remaining rooted in Catholic liturgical directives. The 1,975-square-foot chapel features a stained-glass "River of Life," a water wall, a prayer wall, and Lazure paintings that create a serene environment for prayer and reflection. The chapel continues the hospital’s historic healing mission first begun when the Sisters of Mercy opened St. Joseph’s in San Diego in 1890.

History
Mercy Hospital Chapel, known as Holy Family Chapel, opened in September 2001 within Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego. The hospital’s Catholic roots reach back to 1890, when the Sisters of Mercy founded St. Joseph’s dispensary in downtown San Diego; the current Hillcrest facility was named Mercy Hospital in 1925.
Architecture & Design
The chapel was designed by Aesthetics, Inc. with Moon Mayoras Architects, Inc. as executive architect. It integrates Diocesan directives for Catholic chapels and includes a stained-glass River of Life, a water wall, a prayer wall, and Lazure-painted colored light.

Holy Family Chapel serves patients, families, staff, and visitors as a multicultural and interfaith place of prayer, while also accommodating Catholic liturgical use. It is part of the hospital’s broader spiritual care and mission services.
