History of the Parish

The parish was established in 1901 to serve Springfield's growing Catholic population, with the present church on Pleasant Street dedicated in 1930. In a later diocesan restructuring it was clustered with St. Joseph the Worker in Chester (founded 1946, church dedicated 1969) to form Holy Family Parish. As part of that merger, the Saturday Vigil Mass, Saturday Confessions, and the Wednesday morning Mass were relocated to St. Joseph the Worker in Chester, leaving Sunday morning Mass as the principal weekend liturgy in Springfield.

Marian Devotion and the Our Lady of Fatima Pilgrim Statue

The church, rectory, and parish hall are filled with Marian paintings, statues, and rosaries, much of it created by parishioners. St. Mary's also cares for a replica of Our Lady of Fatima that travels throughout Vermont during the months of May and October. The statue is given to a different family for a week at a time, and the family prays the rosary with it before passing it on to the next host family — a beloved Catholic tradition in the diocese.
