Catholic worship in Paden City began in 1921, when Mater Dolorosa was established as a mission of the parish in New Martinsville. It was served from New Martinsville for decades, then in 1978 was reassigned as a mission of the Sistersville parish. In 1981 the diocese elevated the community to full parish status under the name Mater Dolorosa, and the parish church has continued in Paden City since. The diocese's official chronology credits 1981 with the establishment of the parish and the dedication of Mater Dolorosa that year.
