History of Mary, Queen of Angels
The community grew out of the Diocese of Nashville's earlier senior housing work. After managing Villa Maria Manor — an affordable independent-living facility on White Bridge Road since about 1990 — diocesan executive David Glascoe saw the need for an assisted living option that provided more services than independent living but less intensive care than a nursing home. He and then-Bishop Edward Kmiec discussed the project for several years before receiving approval. Construction began on diocesal land, which kept debt low and rents affordable. The assisted living facility opened in 2001 and has operated continuously ever since, including through the COVID-19 pandemic under rigorous safety protocols. The associated nonprofit, Mary Queen of Angels Inc., is separately incorporated under the diocese's senior care umbrella.
