Why belong here

La Virgen de Guadalupe offers a true bilingual Catholic home in the Virgin River Valley, with three Sunday Masses (English and Spanish), daily Mass Monday through Friday, weekly Eucharistic Adoration, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation every Thursday morning. The parish is small enough to know you by name but active enough to offer a vibrant youth ministry (Life Teen and Edge), a parish-run thrift store that funded the church itself, and a Knights of Columbus council serving local charities. Whether you are a long-time resident of Mesquite, a retiree in Bunkerville or Overton, or a snowbird, you will find a community that prays in two languages and welcomes everyone.

About La Virgen de Guadalupe Catholic Church

La Virgen de Guadalupe is a bilingual Roman Catholic parish in Mesquite, Nevada, belonging to the Archdiocese of Las Vegas. From its single location on Canyon Crest Boulevard, the parish serves the Catholic faithful of Mesquite, Bunkerville, Overton, and the surrounding Virgin River Valley — a fast-growing desert community on the Arizona–Nevada border. The parish's identity is rooted in devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe, with three Sunday Masses celebrated in both English and Spanish, weekday Mass Monday through Friday, weekly Adoration on Thursdays, and a vibrant lay life led by three deacons and an engaged corps of parishioners.

  • Patron: Our Lady of Guadalupe
  • Diocese: Archdiocese of Las Vegas
  • Languages: English and Spanish (bilingual)
  • Service area: Mesquite, Bunkerville, Overton, NV

History

Catholic life in this corner of Nevada began in the early 1970s, when a small group of the faithful gathered for Mass in Overton in private homes and borrowed spaces such as the Valley Inn Motel. The community eventually acquired a former LDS meeting hall in Bunkerville and dedicated it as La Virgen de Guadalupe. Formally established as a mission in 1992 and a parish in 1999 under pastors including Fr. Gustavo Cruz and Father Clarence, the community built a new church in Mesquite on land donated by developer Brian Vail; that church was consecrated in 2009.

From Bunkerville to Mesquite and the Burning of the Mortgage

In 2019 the parish relocated from the old Bunkerville church to the new Mesquite campus at 401 Canyon Crest Blvd. Facing a sizable mortgage, parishioners opened a thrift store in July 2011 to help make the monthly payments. The store's success grew so rapidly that it not only covered the loan but began retiring the principal. In January 2022, the parish marked the ceremonial burning of the mortgage — a defining moment for the community. Proceeds from the thrift store now fund a planned kitchen, social hall, and classrooms.

  • Mission established 1992
  • Parish established 1999
  • Mesquite church consecrated 2009
  • Parish moved to Mesquite 2019

The parish is led by Parochial Administrator Rev. Joji Vincent and is blessed with three permanent deacons who serve the bilingual community. According to the Archdiocese of Las Vegas parish finder and the parish's own website, the current pastoral team is supported by an active parish office staff. Pastors who served the community across its mission and parish history include Fr. Gustavo Cruz, Father Clarence, Rev. Robert Puhlman, and others remembered in parish announcements.

Parish Ministries and Groups

La Virgen de Guadalupe's ministries reflect the parish's bilingual, multigenerational character. The Youth Ministry, launched in January 2024, uses the Life Teen program for high schoolers and the new Edge program for middle schoolers; in summer 2025 the group took 42 youth and 10 chaperones to the Steubenville San Diego Conference. The Knights of Columbus La Virgen de Guadalupe Council is a major civic presence, charter-sponsoring the Mesquite Little League and the Virgin Valley Elementary Summer Reading Program and supporting the local Special Olympics and Salvation Army chapters. A Young Adult Ministry meets Wednesday evenings, and Men's Groups and RCIA/OCIA classes round out parish formation.

  • Youth Ministry — Life Teen (high school) and Edge (middle school)
  • Young Adult Ministry — Wednesdays 6:15 PM – 8:00 PM, gathering room
  • Knights of Columbus — La Virgen de Guadalupe Council
  • Men's Groups

Parish Thrift Store

The parish thrift store is one of the most distinctive ministries of La Virgen de Guadalupe. Originally opened in July 2011 in the old Bunkerville church building to help with monthly mortgage payments, the store proved so popular with locals that it quickly began paying down the principal. Now relocated to 561 W. Mesquite Blvd., Unit 11 in Mesquite, the store continues under store manager Frederick (Rick) Stuve and 50-plus volunteers. Its proceeds now go toward the planned expansion of the church — a kitchen, social hall, and classrooms — and it sells a wide variety of gently used household goods.

  • Address: 561 W. Mesquite Blvd., Unit 11, Mesquite, NV
  • Phone: (702) 346-1234

  • Summer hours: Mon–Wed 9 AM – 1 PM; Sat 9 – 11 AM; closed Thu/Fri

Knights of Columbus — La Virgen de Guadalupe Council

Affiliated with the parish, the local Knights of Columbus council is a major community presence in Mesquite. They host an annual Lenten Fish Fry (with fried catfish or cod, fries, hush puppies, and homemade sides), the annual 9/11 First Responders Appreciation Ceremony held on parish grounds, and are charter sponsors of the Mesquite Little League and the Virgin Valley Elementary Summer Reading Program.
