The Ithaca College Catholic Community is a campus ministry of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester, centered on Jesus Christ and rooted in the Eucharist. It serves as a spiritual home for students, faculty, and staff at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York, gathering for Sunday Mass at Muller Chapel, the celebration of the Sacraments, faith formation, and Christian community life. The chaplaincy is shared with the Cornell Catholic Community and is led by a team that includes Father Daniel McMullin (Priest/Director), Matthew J. Hall, Ph.D. (Associate Director), and Mary Therese Holzhauer, DMA (Campus Minister). Through liturgical ministries, retreats, OCIA, Confirmation preparation, Bible study, and social/service programs, the community invites members to grow in knowledge of the faith and integrate faith, justice, and service into everyday life.

The Ithaca College Catholic Community offers a true spiritual home on campus: Sunday evening Mass at Muller Chapel is followed by a shared community dinner, and the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is offered monthly. Members can grow through the OCIA process (becoming Catholic), Confirmation preparation, retreats, Bible study, and individual pastoral counseling with priests and ministers. With a student-led Leadership Team, committees on spirituality, service, PR/social justice, and social life, plus a music ministry that enriches liturgy, there are many ways to belong, serve, and build lasting Christian friendships.

About the Ithaca College Catholic Community

The Ithaca College Catholic Community is a campus ministry of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester, centered on Jesus Christ and rooted in the Eucharist. As a registered student organization, it is also led in significant ways by a student Leadership Team supported by four committees: Spirituality, Service, PR and Social Justice, and Social. The community's stated mission is to pray, worship, learn and spread the Good News on campus; to foster awareness of God's presence; to build community; to develop a love for creation; and to integrate faith, justice, and service into everyday life.

History

The community has its roots in the Jesuit tradition at Ithaca College. An archived community page identifies Father Carsten P. Martensen, S.J. as a former Director of Campus Ministry, with his office located on the lower level of Muller Chapel. In 2019, the Bishop of Rochester invited Father Daniel McMullin to lead both the Ithaca College Catholic Community and the Cornell Catholic Community, a transition from Jesuit to diocesan priest leadership of the campus ministry.

Father Daniel McMullin, M.Div., DMA — Priest/Director

Father Dan serves as Priest/Director of the Ithaca College Catholic Community and the Cornell Catholic Community. He oversees spiritual formation, liturgical life, and sacramental preparation, including the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA), Confirmation preparation, individual pastoral counseling and discernment, retreats, and Bible study. He is happy to discuss Catholic theology and the beauty of the sacred liturgy. Appointments can be made via his Calendly page.

Mary Therese Holzhauer, DMA — Campus Minister

Dr. Mary Therese Holzhauer is the music director at Immaculate Conception and currently serves as Campus Minister for the Ithaca College Catholic Community. She was received into the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester in 1998 and has served the Church as a parochial vicar, a pastor, and a campus minister; campus ministry has been her primary work since 2005. Sacraments & Faith Formation

In addition to Mass and Confession, the Catholic Community offers preparation for the sacraments of initiation through OCIA and a Confirmation preparation program. Father Daniel McMullin oversees spiritual formation, liturgical life, and sacramental preparation for both the Ithaca College and Cornell communities.

Music & Liturgical Ministries

The community has a music ministry that celebrates Mass through liturgical music, and offers opportunities to volunteer in liturgical or music ministries at Mass. The Campus Minister, Mary Therese Holzhauer, also serves as music director at Immaculate Conception Church in Ithaca.
