Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hamtramck, Michigan, is a vibrant parish serving the Ukrainian Catholic community in the greater Detroit area. History
The Ukrainian Catholic Church is the largest Eastern Catholic Church of its own law. After the fall of the Soviet Empire, the Ukrainian Catholic Church experienced a new era of freedom. The first Ukrainians arrived in Detroit in the early 1900s. A small Ukrainian community founded their first parish on Cicotte Street in 1911. With more people moving to Detroit’s east side, a new church was needed. Blueprints were drawn by Maxim Harmatiuk, and the cornerstone of the current wooden church in Hamtramck was blessed by Father Bartosh on December 25, 1913. The first Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Palm Sunday, April 12, 1914.
Basilian Fathers
The Basilian Fathers (Order of Saint Basil the Great) arrived in 1962. They brought new pastoral leadership and renovated the church interior to reflect traditional Byzantine Rite aesthetics, including frescoes and an iconostas commissioned by Mychailo Dmytrenko. The Basilian Fathers serve 62 parishes, more than 250 daughter churches, and nine mission stations in eastern Ukraine.
Ministries
The parish offers a wide range of ministries including Faith Formation, Youth Ministry, Catechism, Parish School, Community Outreach, Charity and Service, Music Ministry, and Liturgical Ministry. These ministries are designed to nurture faith and build a loving, inclusive community.
Sacraments
The parish offers all seven sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Marriage, and Anointing of the Sick. Sacraments are administered according to the traditions of the Ukrainian Catholic Church.
