Immaculate Conception was founded as a Catholic mission in the 1860s to serve the growing mill community of Penacook on the Contoocook River. The current church building was dedicated in 1870, and the parish was formally established in 1880 according to the Diocese of Manchester's records. It remains one of the historic Catholic parishes of Merrimack County and part of the diocese's Capital Deanery, alongside parishes in Concord, Hooksett, Pittsfield, Suncook, and Hillsborough.
