About Immaculate Conception Parish

History of Immaculate Conception

The parish's roots reach back to a frame structure built around 1849. The Catholic community purchased this building from the Universalists in about 1902, and it served the parish for another fifteen years. On Palm Sunday, April 1, 1917, a lightning strike set the wooden church ablaze and it was completely destroyed. The congregation built the present Immaculate Conception Church over the following year, marking 100 years in this building in 2018. The parish website preserves photographs of the original church 'back in the day' for visitors and parishioners.

  • Original frame church: built c. 1849
  • Acquired from Universalists: c. 1902
  • Original church insured for $6,700 when it burned
  • Lightning fire on Palm Sunday, April 1, 1917
  • Current church constructed in the year or so after the fire
  • 100th anniversary of the present building: 2018
