About Holy Trinity · Huron, South Dakota
Holy Trinity Parish is a Roman Catholic parish of the Diocese of Sioux Falls serving Huron, South Dakota. According to GCatholic, Catholic worship has been present in Huron since 1881, and the parish in its present form was created on July 1, 1999, when three formerly separate Huron-area congregations — St. Martin's Church in Huron, St. Patrick's Church of Cavour, and the Church of the Resurrection — merged into a single community under the Holy Trinity name. The parish campus at 425 21st Street SW combines the church with Holy Trinity Catholic School (preschool through 5th grade) and a parish life center, and today is served by Fr. About Holy Trinity Parish
Holy Trinity is a Roman Catholic parish in Huron, South Dakota, within the Diocese of Sioux Falls. According to the parish's own welcome and to GCatholic's records, Catholic faith has been present in Huron since 1881, and the parish in its modern form dates from July 1, 1999, when three formerly independent Huron-area congregations — St. Martin's Church (Huron), St. Patrick's Church (Cavour), and the Church of the Resurrection — were united as one community. Today the parish serves Catholics across Beadle County and beyond from a single campus on 21st Street SW that combines the church, the parish school, and the Parish Life Center. Its mission, as stated on the parish website, is 'to promote, develop, and enhance our parish to fulfill the mission of Christ through worship, evangelization, lifelong faith formation, education, and service.'
History
Catholic life in Huron began in 1881. Through the 20th century the local church grew and split: St. Martin's was the main parish in Huron; St. Patrick's served the rural community of Cavour; and the Church of the Resurrection provided another worship site. A Catholic school was founded in 1929 as St. Theresa School, renamed St. Martin's School in 1961. As rural populations declined and facilities aged, the Diocese of Sioux Falls under Bishop Robert Gruss directed the three communities to merge. They officially became Holy Trinity Catholic Parish on July 1, 1999. A new Parish Life Center broke ground in fall 2003, the parish school was renamed Holy Trinity Catholic School on July 1, 2004, and the historic St. Martin's church building was demolished in 2006 — though its stained-glass windows were saved and reinstalled in the new church, and the wooden Stations of the Cross from St. Patrick's, Cavour, were likewise preserved in the worship space. In 2009 the parish marked its 10th anniversary and the school celebrated 80 years of Catholic education.
