About this parish

Holy Trinity–Epiphany Parish is a Roman Catholic parish in the Ironbound section of Newark, New Jersey, within the Archdiocese of Newark. It was formed in 2002 through the merger of Holy Trinity Parish (founded in 1902 for Lithuanian immigrants) and Epiphany Parish (a Portuguese-speaking community). Today the parish at 207 Adams Street serves a diverse, bilingual congregation — historically rooted in Lithuanian, Polish and Portuguese Catholic traditions — with three weekend Masses and daily Masses in both English and Portuguese.

Holy Trinity Parish was founded in 1902 by Lithuanian immigrants in the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark. For the eight years prior, the Lithuanian community had worshipped at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Holy Trinity built its own church at 205 Adams Street around 1906–1917. The building was designed in the Romanesque Revival style by the architectural firm Hughes and Backoff and was one of the most striking Lithuanian churches in New Jersey. In 1906 a fire damaged the church, but the community rebuilt. The parish flourished as a center of Lithuanian Catholic life in Newark for decades. The original Lithuanian church was later damaged by fire in 1981; while the damage did not destroy the building, the Archdiocese of Newark did not permit repairs, and the parish was relocated to a simpler two-story parish hall (built in 1963) on the same block. Inside, the basement hall was converted into the worship space; religious statues and Lithuanian items — including a Lithuanian sun-cross with Rūpintojėlis (the 'Pensive Christ') originally placed near the old church in 1962 — were preserved. A stained-glass window with both Lithuanian and English 'Holy Trinity' lettering remains at the entrance. Epiphany Parish was established in 1992 as a Portuguese-language parish in Newark. As the Portuguese-speaking community grew and the Lithuanian population gradually declined, the two parishes merged in 2002 (per the Archdiocese of Newark's archives, formally recorded as the October 2002 merger), creating Holy Trinity–Epiphany Parish. The merged parish continued to celebrate Mass in Portuguese, alongside the inherited Polish and Lithuanian heritage. By 2024 the parish reported over 145 registered families, an average weekend Mass attendance of about 455, and three Sunday Masses. In 2022 the Archdiocese united Holy Trinity–Epiphany with neighboring Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish under a single pastor, and in 2025 Reverend Paulo dos Santos Frade was appointed pastor of both parishes through June 2031.

History of Holy Trinity–Epiphany Parish

Holy Trinity Parish was founded in 1902 by Lithuanian Catholic immigrants in the Ironbound section of Newark, after the community had worshipped for eight years at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. The parish built its own church at 205 Adams Street, opened c. 1917 in the Romanesque Revival style by the firm Hughes and Backoff; a 1906 fire had damaged an earlier structure. The original church was damaged by fire again in 1981, and the Archdiocese did not permit repairs, so the parish relocated to the basement of a 1963 parish hall on the same block. Many Lithuanian furnishings — including a sun-cross bearing Rūpintojėlis placed in 1962 — were preserved in the new worship space. Epiphany Parish was established in 1992 as a Portuguese-language parish in Newark. As the Portuguese-speaking population grew, the two parishes merged in October 2002 to form Holy Trinity–Epiphany Parish.

The Building and Lithuanian Heritage

The original Holy Trinity church at 205 Adams Street was a Romanesque Revival building designed by Hughes and Backoff and opened around 1917. After the 1981 fire the parish moved into the basement of the 1963 parish hall; the main floor above still functions as a parish hall. Lithuanian Catholic heritage is preserved in the current worship space through a stained-glass 'Holy Trinity' window with both Lithuanian and English lettering, religious statues and crosses from the old church (some bearing Lithuanian inscriptions), a Vytis on the entrance glass, and a Lithuanian sun-cross with the traditional Pensive Christ (Rūpintojėlis) relocated from the original church in 1962.
