Holy Spirit Parish is a Roman Catholic parish in the Diocese of Erie, Pennsylvania, formed on December 2, 2023, through the merger of five historic parishes in Clearfield and Jefferson counties: St. Catherine of Siena (DuBois), St. Michael the Archangel (DuBois), St. Bernard (Falls Creek), Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Sykesville), and St. Mary (Reynoldsville). The parish church is the former St. Catherine of Siena Church at 118 S. State Street, DuBois; the former Assumption Church in Sykesville retains mission status and continues to celebrate Sunday Mass. Holy Spirit Parish is led by Pastor Rev. John Malthaner, Parochial Vicar Rev. Michael Scanga, and Permanent Deacon Daniel Satterlee, and serves a broad geographic area across several small communities with multiple weekly Masses in English, perpetual Eucharistic Adoration, and a wide range of parish ministries.

Parish History
Holy Spirit Parish was canonically established on December 2, 2023, the First Sunday of Advent, by Bishop Lawrence T. Persico of the Diocese of Erie. It was formed through the merger of five parishes serving Clearfield and Jefferson counties, with pastoral planning beginning in 2019 under Msgr. Richard Siefer, longtime pastor of St. Catherine of Siena. The five merged communities — St. Catherine of Siena (DuBois, founded 1877), St. Michael the Archangel (DuBois, founded 1912), St. Bernard (Falls Creek, founded 1901, parish 1952), Assumption of the BVM (Sykesville, founded 1923), and St. Mary (Reynoldsville, founded 1875) — each bring more than a century of faith heritage to the new parish family. St. Catherine of Siena serves as the parish church, while Assumption of the BVM in Sykesville retains mission status and continues to celebrate Sunday Mass.

Faith Formation and Religious Education
The Faith Formation Office partners with families to grow in knowledge of the Church and its traditions. Programs include Faith Formation classes during the school year for Grades 1–8 (preparing public-school and homeschooled students for First Reconciliation and First Communion), Confirmation class for Grade 9, monthly parent Bible-based education sessions, a Baptism class for new parents, Children's Liturgy of the Word for preschool and early elementary students during the 9:00 AM Mass, and Vacation Bible School. OCIA — Becoming Catholic
Holy Spirit Parish runs the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA, formerly RCIA), a journey of faith in which questions are welcomed, friendships are formed, and lives are changed. The parish welcomes adults who feel called to explore the Catholic faith as well as those seeking to complete the sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation. Deacon Dan Satterlee personally follows up with those who express interest.

Ministries and Groups
Parish life at Holy Spirit is sustained by an active network of lay ministries and devotional societies. Liturgical roles include Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Lectors, Altar Servers, Ushers, a Live-streaming team, and the Music Ministry of cantors and musicians. Out of the sanctuary, members serve through the Rosary Society, Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus, the Fundraising committee, Bringing Holy Communion to the sick and homebound, and various Social Activities.

Outreach and Community Meals
In November 2025, Holy Spirit Parish launched a free Thanksgiving meal that served 146 people and quickly became the seed of an ongoing ministry. Parishioners donated ingredients, baked desserts, and volunteered for hours; Father John Malthaner set a powerful example of servant leadership, stirring potatoes, washing dishes, and praying with volunteers before serving began. A free Christmas take-out dinner followed on December 23, with the parish hoping to grow the dinners into a year-round ministry extending across all the communities that make up Holy Spirit Parish.

Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick
Holy Spirit Parish provides the Anointing of the Sick to parishioners facing serious illness or the effects of old age. Requests can be made by contacting the parish office or emailing the pastor, Father John Malthaner, at [email protected].

Worship Sites
Holy Spirit Parish worships at two main sites within its combined territory. The parish church is the former St. Catherine of Siena Church in DuBois, and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Sykesville retains mission status and continues to host Sunday Mass. The other former parish churches — St. Bernard (Falls Creek), St. Mary (Reynoldsville), and St. Michael the Archangel (DuBois) — remain available for occasional weekday Masses, funerals, and weddings.
