About Holy Spirit Catholic Church

Holy Spirit Catholic Church is a Roman Catholic parish in the Diocese of Marquette serving Menominee, Michigan. The parish gathers at 1016 Tenth Avenue, in the heart of Menominee on the Upper Peninsula's western edge, and provides a full schedule of daily and weekend Masses along with Reconciliation, Eucharistic Adoration, and outreach to local care communities. Holy Spirit shares pastoral staff and ministry with neighboring Resurrection Parish and supports faith formation through the regional St. John Paul II Catholic Academy.

History

The building that is now Holy Spirit Catholic Church was originally the Epiphany Church, situated next to St. Joseph's Hospital on Ogden Avenue. St. Joseph's Hospital was established in 1891 and operated by the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, who expanded the facility repeatedly through the early 1900s and continued to serve the Menominee community for generations. After industrialist Marshall Lloyd died in 1927 and left his fortune to the city's healthcare, a new hospital (St. Joseph's–Lloyd Hospital) was dedicated in 1950; the original church was later rededicated as Holy Spirit and continues as an active parish in the Diocese of Marquette.

  • 1891 — St. Joseph's Hospital built on Ogden Avenue next to Epiphany Church.
  • Early 1900s — Hospital expanded with surgical suite, private rooms, lab, x-ray, and a chapel.
  • 1927 — Marshall Lloyd's bequest funds a new hospital.
  • 1950 — St. Joseph's–Lloyd Hospital dedicated next door.
  • Present — Building rededicated as Holy Spirit Catholic Church, part of the Diocese of Marquette.
