History
Founded in 1878 as a chapel in a rented cottage near the Atlantic Hotel, the site was originally owned by Philadelphia businessman John Myers. The first Catholic Mass was celebrated in 1877 by Bishop Thomas A. Becker of the Diocese of Wilmington. By 1878, a functioning chapel was established. The chapel was formally named St. Mary Star of the Sea in 1880, when Bishop Becker celebrated Mass there. The site is now occupied by Dolle’s Candyland and the Cork Bar.
