Holy Rosary — Trail City Mission Church

Holy Rosary is the Catholic mission church serving Trail City, South Dakota. It is part of the Tri-Parish Community of Holy Cross (Timber Lake), St. Mary's (Isabel), and Holy Rosary (Trail City). Weekend Mass is celebrated at Holy Rosary on Saturday evenings (February, April, June, August, October, December) and Sunday mornings (January, March, May, July, September, November), shared with a single pastor who also serves the other two parishes. The parish is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary under the title 'Queen of the Holy Rosary.'

Tri-Parish Community & Pastor

Holy Rosary is administered as a mission of Holy Cross Church in Timber Lake and shares one pastor, office staff, faith formation program, and youth ministry with St. Mary's in Isabel. Father Brian Lane serves as pastor of all three parishes; he was installed on July 29, 2018 by Bishop Robert Gruss after being reassigned from Blessed Sacrament Parish in Rapid City. He is supported by parish secretary Cara Biegler and bookkeeper Becky Maciejewski.

History & Catholic Presence in Trail City

Holy Rosary was established as a mission parish of Holy Cross Church in Timber Lake to bring the sacraments and Catholic life to the small community of Trail City in Dewey County. The Presentation Sisters of Dubuque, who arrived in Timber Lake in August 1919, helped sustain the wider mission area; from 1979–1981, Sisters Mary Nora Welter and Concepta Joseph Milinski ran the Holy Cross School of Religion for Timber Lake and its mission parishes of Holy Rosary (Trail City) and St. Mary (Isabel). In May 2018 the Diocese reassigned Fr. Brian Lane from Blessed Sacrament in Rapid City to serve as pastor of the Holy Cross / St. Mary's / Holy Rosary grouping, and he was installed by Bishop Robert Gruss on July 29, 2018.

Youth Ministry & Faith Formation

Youth and faith formation across the Tri-Parish are run jointly. The Edge and Life Teen youth programs draw students from Isabel, Firesteel, Timber Lake, Trail City, Whitehorse, and Promise. Parish faith formation coordinators — including LuAnn Lindskov (MS/HS) and Sarah Schweitzer (elementary) — organize religious education, retreats, and service projects for the tri-parish community.

Outreach: Boxes of Joy

Holy Rosary participates in the diocesan-wide Boxes of Joy program run through Cross Catholic Outreach, which sends Christmas gifts to children in developing countries. The parish serves as a drop-off point and partners with the tri-parish youth. In one recent year, sixty Edge and Life Teen youth from Isabel, Firesteel, Timber Lake, Trail City, Whitehorse, and Promise packed 52 Boxes of Joy and prayed the Rosary before packing each one. Confirmation students from Lemmon have also donated boxes through Holy Rosary as a drop-off site.
