Why belong here

Holy Rosary is the spiritual heart of Passaic's Polish Catholic community — a parish where Mass is celebrated in Polish every day of the week, where devotion to St. John Paul II is woven into the fabric of parish life, and where Polish-language faith formation, rosary groups, and Processions (including the annual Polish-American parade) keep immigrant heritage alive across generations. Visitors can walk through a historic Holy Door, venerate a century-old Sacred Heart statue in the church garden, and join a parish that has produced its own vocations and welcomed saints in the making — from Cardinal Wojtyła's 1976 Mass to the funeral of Servant of God Archbishop Cieplak. For Polish-American Catholics seeking Polish-language liturgy, sacramental life, and a strong sense of community, Holy Rosary offers a rare combination of historic depth, living devotional life, and genuine pastoral care.

About Holy Rosary Shrine to St. John Paul II [Polish] · Passaic, New Jersey

The Diocesan Shrine of Saint John Paul II at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church is a Polish-heritage parish in Passaic, New Jersey, founded in 1918 to serve the growing community of Polish immigrants who had come to work in the city's textile factories. Designated as a diocesan shrine in 2012 — one year after Pope John Paul II's beatification — it serves as a center of devotion to the Polish pope and remains the spiritual home of Passaic's Polish Catholic community. The parish, a Jubilee Church during the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy (2016) and home to a Holy Door, is part of the Diocese of Paterson and offers Mass primarily in Polish, alongside one English Mass each Sunday.

Parish History

Holy Rosary Parish was founded in 1918 to serve the Polish immigrant community of Passaic, the second Polish parish in the city after St. Joseph (1892). The first pastor, Father Stanisław Kruczek, oversaw construction of a church designed by architect F.J. Schwarz, which was dedicated on January 2, 1921 by Archbishop Felix Guerra of Santiago de Cuba. The parish endured a devastating fire on June 12, 1922 and was rebuilt within months. In 1925–1926 it became the American headquarters and final resting place of Servant of God Archbishop Jan Feliks Cieplak, Archbishop-designate of Vilnius, whose funeral was celebrated at the parish on February 20, 1926. The parish was designated the Diocesan Shrine of Saint John Paul II in 2012, one year after the pope's beatification.

Founding and Early Construction (1908–1921)

The idea of a second Polish parish in eastern Passaic was raised in 1908. An unauthorized Our Lady Queen of Poland Parish appeared in 1913, but it took until February 19, 1918 for the new parish of Holy Rosary to be officially erected with Father Kruczek as pastor. A Crystal Ballroom on Eighth Street served as a temporary chapel from March 5, 1918. By Easter the faithful had donated $10,000. Architect F.J. Schwarz drew up the plans, ground was broken July 18, 1918, Bishop O'Connor consecrated the hall on February 9, 1919, the school opened February 1, 1920, the rectory was completed October 16, 1920, and the church was dedicated January 2, 1921 by Archbishop Felix Guerra, with painter Wojciech Kossak and bass Adam Didur in attendance.

  • Founding pastor: Father Stanisław Kruczek (later Rev. Canon Kruczek)
  • Architect: F.J. Schwarz
  • Land blessing: July 18, 1918 (Rev. Canon James Mooney)
  • Hall consecrated: February 9, 1919 (Bishop O'Connor)
  • School opened: February 1, 1920
  • Rectory completed: October 16, 1920
  • Church dedicated: January 2, 1921 (Archbishop Felix Guerra of Santiago de Cuba)

The 1922 Fire and Rebuilding

On June 12, 1922, a fire that began in a neighboring home swept through the church and school in roughly an hour, leaving only the outer walls and causing about $150,000 in damage. Under Father Kruczek's leadership the parish rallied within weeks, raising an additional $6,000 alongside insurance funds. Three new church bells — St. Stanisław Martyr, St. Michael the Archangel, and St. Francis of Assisi — were blessed on December 10, 1922; Archbishop Ernest Koppo of Kimberley, Australia, blessed the rebuilt church on April 8, 1923; and a new organ costing $15,000 was installed and blessed on October 4, 1924 by Rev. Canon Puchalski of Brooklyn.

  • Fire date: June 12, 1922
  • Estimated losses: ~$150,000
  • Parish fundraiser: $6,000 within weeks
  • Bells blessed: December 10, 1922
  • Church re-blessed: April 8, 1923 (Archbishop Ernest Koppo)
  • New organ: October 4, 1924 ($15,000)

Archbishop Jan Feliks Cieplak (1925–1926)

On November 10, 1925, Archbishop Jan Feliks Cieplak — recently released from a Bolshevik death sentence and deported from Soviet territory — arrived in Passaic and chose the Holy Rosary Rectory as his American headquarters. He toured 375 parishes and 800 institutions in 25 dioceses across the U.S. His official welcoming ceremony was held January 24, 1926, the same day he was appointed Archbishop of Vilnius. He fell ill with pneumonia and influenza on February 10, 1926, was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Passaic, and died on February 17, 1926. His Funeral Mass was celebrated at Holy Rosary three days later by Bishop Schrembs of Cleveland. His remains were eventually interred at Vilnius Cathedral. He is honored as a Servant of God.

  • Archbishop Jan Feliks Cieplak (1857–1926)
  • Arrived at Holy Rosary Rectory: November 10, 1925
  • Appointed Archbishop of Vilnius: December 14, 1925 (announced locally Jan 24, 1926)

  • Funeral Mass at Holy Rosary: February 20, 1926 (Bishop Schrembs, Cleveland)
  • Cause for sainthood: Servant of God

Consecration to the Sacred Heart (1927)

Following Pope Pius XI's establishment of the feast of Christ the King, Father Kruczek consecrated the entire parish to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on June 12, 1927 — exactly five years to the day after the great fire. A bronze statue of the Sacred Heart on a granite base inscribed 'JESUS, BLESS OUR PARISH,' donated by the family of Maria and Walenty Walter, was blessed in the garden between the church and the rectory.

  • Consecration date: June 12, 1927
  • Statue inscription: 'JESUS, BLESS OUR PARISH'

Saint John Paul II and the Shrine Designation

On August 6, 1976, Cardinal Karol Wojtyła — the future Pope John Paul II — celebrated Mass at Holy Rosary while attending the Philadelphia Eucharistic Congress with 19 Polish bishops, marking the 50th anniversary of Archbishop Cieplak's death and visiting St. Mary's Hospital where Cieplak had died. One year after John Paul II's beatification (May 1, 2011), Bishop Arthur J. Serratelli designated Holy Rosary the Diocesan Shrine of Saint John Paul II; Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz visited the parish on July 1, 2012. Bishop Serratelli later presented the shrine with a replica of John Paul II's crosier.

  • Cardinal Wojtyła's Mass: August 6, 1976
  • Beatification of John Paul II: May 1, 2011
  • Shrine designation: 2012 (Diocese of Paterson)
  • Visit by Cardinal Dziwisz: July 1, 2012
  • Gift from Bishop Serratelli: replica of John Paul II's crosier

Faith Formation, Youth, and Sacraments

Holy Rosary maintains a robust Polish-language faith formation program and an active youth ministry. On May 31, 2024, Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney celebrated Confirmation for 59 parish youth at a Mass concelebrated by Father A. Stefan Las (pastor) and Father Michał Dykalski (parochial vicar). In the summer of 2025, ninety young people from the parish, accompanied by Father Las, traveled to Rome for the Jubilee of Youth, taking part in the vigil and Mass with Pope Leo XIV at Tor Vergata on August 2–3, 2025. Sacraments prepared and celebrated include Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation, Matrimony, Anointing of the Sick, and Funeral Masses.

  • Confirmation class 2024: 59 youth confirmed
  • Jubilee of Youth pilgrimage 2025: 90 young people

Parish Events and Polish-American Heritage

Beyond the regular liturgical schedule, Holy Rosary hosts an annual Polish-American Parade (the 2020/2021 Parade is documented on the parish website), diocesan and regional heritage celebrations, and pilgrimages. As a diocesan shrine, it welcomes individual and group pilgrims seeking the intercession of Saint John Paul II, especially around his feast day (October 22) and the anniversary of his 1976 visit (August 6).

  • Annual Polish-American Parade
  • Jubilee Year pilgrimages (local and international)
  • Feast of Saint John Paul II: October 22
