About Holy Redeemer Parish

Holy Redeemer Catholic Church is a parish of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Mobile serving Eufaula, Alabama, and the surrounding Wiregrass region along the Chattahoochee River. Its published mission statement reads: 'We, the community of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, strive to live as a sign of Christ in our world by accepting, living, and proclaiming the Kingdom of God. As a community of faith within the Roman Catholic Church, we are united in our service through worship, prayer, fellowship, education, justice, and peace.' The parish also serves as the parent of St. Pius X Mission in nearby Union Springs, Bullock County.

History

Catholic missionary activity in the Eufaula area traces back to the post–Civil War era, when Bishop John Quinlan of the Diocese of Mobile re-established Catholic churches across Alabama, including one in Eufaula. The present Holy Redeemer Parish was canonically established in 1946 and incorporated under that name as a 501(c)(3) religious organization (EIN 84-4723359). It operates as a child entity of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops group exemption. The parish grew to include a Spanish-language Mass on Sundays and to assume pastoral responsibility for St. Pius X Mission in Union Springs. It has been twice designated a Jubilee pilgrimage church by the Archdiocese of Mobile: for the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in 2016 and for the 2025 Holy Year.

  • 1860s: Catholic worship re-established in Eufaula under Bishop John Quinlan, Diocese of Mobile.
  • 1946: Holy Redeemer Parish formally established (year formed per IRS records).
  • Era of bilingual expansion: Spanish Mass added to the Sunday schedule.
  • 2016: Designated a Jubilee Church for the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy.
  • 2025: Designated a Jubilee pilgrimage site for the Holy Year 2025.

The Archdiocese of Mobile

Holy Redeemer belongs to the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Mobile, the oldest Catholic jurisdiction in Alabama. It was established in 1825 as the Vicariate-Apostolic of Alabama and the Floridas, became the Diocese of Mobile in 1829 under Bishop Michael Portier, and was raised to archdiocesan status in 1980 with Archbishop Oscar H. Lipscomb as its first archbishop. Today the archdiocese encompasses the lower 28 counties of Alabama (22,969 square miles) with about 113,000 Catholics across 76 parishes and 7 mission parishes.

St. Pius X Mission, Union Springs

Holy Redeemer Parish also ministers to St. Pius X Mission at 308 Kennon Street in Union Springs, Alabama, the seat of Bullock County. The mission is one block north of the Union Springs Elementary, next to the Oak Hill Cemetery. Saturday Vigil Mass is offered in both English and Spanish, and Saturday Confessions are available before Mass.
