Holy Name Catholic Parish is a Roman Catholic parish serving Routt County, Colorado, with its main church at 524 Oak Street in downtown Steamboat Springs and a mission church, St. Martin of Tours, in nearby Oak Creek. Founded in 1907 and currently pastored by Fr. Grzegorz (Gregory) Cioch, the parish belongs to the Archdiocese of Denver and welcomes both longtime locals and the many Catholic visitors who pass through the Steamboat ski country. Parish History
Holy Name Catholic Parish traces its origins to 1907, when Bishop Nicholas Matz — the second Bishop of Denver and the first graduate of Denver Seminary — authorized its creation the same year the railroad reached Steamboat Springs. Father John James Meyers was placed in charge of the Northwestern Colorado Missionary District, a vast area stretching from Berthoud Pass to the Utah and Wyoming borders; he built Holy Name as Steamboat's first Catholic church in 1908 and also began celebrating the Eucharist in nearby Oak Creek. Early Masses were held in private homes, halls, the Masonic Hall and even the Steamboat Pilot office.

- 1911 — Lots 11, 12 and 10 on Oak Street acquired; church expanded

- 1964 — Ground broken for new Holy Name Church; renovations at St. Martin of Tours; first Masses celebrated in new chapel Dec 22 and main church Christmas Eve

- 2012 — Groundbreaking for new church; demolition of one-third of standing church and three north-end buildings
- September 14, 2014 — Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila consecrates the new Holy Name Church debt-free on the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross
- March 2020 — COVID-19 pandemic closes the churches for the first time in 112 years; live-streaming begins
- Summer 2021 — Capital Campaign and new parish mission statement/logo; Archbishop Aquila names Holy Name a Pilot Parish
- Fall 2022 — Fr. Grzegorz Cioch succeeds Fr. Ernest Bayer as pastor
- Spring 2023 — Enrichment Center (Phase 2) completed beneath the church

Faith Formation & Religious Education
Faith formation at Holy Name spans the whole life of the parish, with OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation for Adults, formerly RCIA) running year-round for inquirers and catechumens; ongoing Children's Faith Formation led by Maureen Crouch and Erin Kissane; and youth formation for middle and high schoolers.

St. Martin of Tours Mission — Oak Creek
Holy Name Parish shares pastoral care with St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Oak Creek, about 25 minutes west of Steamboat Springs. St. Martin's was renovated alongside the 1964 Steamboat building campaign and continues to host a Sunday Mass each week, with confessions before it.

Enrichment Center
Completed in Spring 2023, the Enrichment Center converted the basement beneath the new church into roughly 9,200 square feet of classrooms, meeting rooms, quiet areas, viewing areas, recreation areas, kitchens, storage and bathrooms. It is the home for parish faith formation, youth gatherings and small-group ministry.

Sacraments & OCIA
Parishioners can prepare for Baptism, Confirmation, First Eucharist, Marriage and Anointing of the Sick through the parish office, and the OCIA process welcomes unbaptized adults as well as already-baptized Christians seeking full Communion with the Catholic Church (without being re-baptized).

Parish Identity, Mission & Evangelization
Holy Name describes itself as a parish built on faith, hope and love, and in 2021 introduced a new parish mission statement and logo. Archbishop Aquila named Holy Name a Pilot Parish, and a Strategic Leadership Team is working with archdiocesan personnel to find new and effective ways to evangelize the secular mountain culture of the Yampa Valley and form dynamic Catholic disciples.
