Holy Name Catholic Church is a bilingual English/Spanish parish of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Antonio, located at 3814 Nash Blvd on the city's southeast side in the 78223 ZIP code. The parish was established on June 29, 1959, when it was carved out of the growing St. Margaret Mary Parish, and began with 580 registered families. Today it is a multigenerational community served by a parish school (Pre-K through 8th grade), a Religious Education/OCIA program, a Food Bank Outreach Ministry, and a long list of parish organizations including the Knights of Columbus, Altar Society, Men's Club, Sisters in Faith, and Society of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Parish History
Holy Name was born of the post-war growth of St. Margaret Mary Parish. The Archdiocese bought ten acres on January 31, 1957; Father Edward Dworaczyk erected a temporary chapel-school in December of that year; and the parish was officially established on June 29, 1959 with Father John McDonald as its first pastor and 580 families on the rolls. The school began in surplus military barracks remodeled by the men of the parish in 1961, with the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity as the first staff, before a permanent eight-room school and rectory were completed in September 1962. Since then the parish has been led by a succession of pastors — Fathers Brunner, Dolan, Msgr. Herzig, Fr. Hubertus, Msgr. Kurzaj, interim priests Horan and Albaladejo, Fr. Szyda, Fr. Martin Parayno OSB, and now Fr. Juan Carlos Bello Carillo — each leaving a physical and spiritual mark on the campus: the Activity Center (groundbreaking 1981), the Endowment Fund (1982), the modern Education Building (blessed 1989), and the church's major 1997 renovation.

Holy Name Catholic School
Holy Name Catholic School has been on the same campus since 1961 and now serves Pre-K through 8th grade under the Good Shepherd Network reorganization, with David Solis as principal. The school offers an accredited preschool program for three- and four-year-olds, an Extended Daycare (licensed, 7:00 am – 6:00 pm), and a full extracurricular life including sports, Student Council, the National Junior Honor Society, patrols, and altar servers. Financial aid and a tuition-assistance program tied to parish fundraising are available.

Faith Formation & Religious Education
The parish's Religious Education (CCD) and OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults) programs serve both children and adults, with OCIA classes for children meeting Tuesday evenings and OCIA for adults meeting Thursday evenings in the RE Conference Room. Adult Confirmation classes are also offered to Catholics 18+ who have already received Baptism and First Eucharist. Parishioner Irma Bickel coordinates the program and is the first point of contact for inquiries.

Holy Name is supported by a wide range of parish ministries and lay organizations. From traditional groups like the Knights of Columbus, Altar Society, and Men's Club, to newer faith communities like Sisters in Faith (a women's ministry for ages 18+), A.C.T.S., and Shine, the parish offers multiple ways to get involved across ages and interests. Bereavement Ministry and the Society of Our Lady of Guadalupe carry the parish's outreach and Marian devotion; the Holy Name C.Y.O. continues the parish's long tradition of youth athletics.

Outreach Ministry & Service
The Outreach Ministry operates the parish's Food Bank, helping neighbors in need with food, clothing, and emergency financial assistance. Donations of food are collected at the back of the church and at the rectory, and the ministry invites parishioners to volunteer their time. The Sisters in Faith ministry also contributes funds to support other Holy Name ministries and community causes.

Sacraments
Holy Name celebrates the seven sacraments in the usual order of the Roman Rite. Infant Baptism, First Eucharist, Confirmation (including Adult Confirmation), Matrimony, Anointing of the Sick, and RCIA/OCIA preparation are all coordinated through the parish office. Adult Confirmation requires a copy of the baptismal certificate at registration and prior reception of First Eucharist; OCIA for both children and adults runs in the fall and winter on Tuesday/Thursday evenings.

65th Anniversary Jubilee (2026)
In 2026 Holy Name will mark 65 years as a parish. The capstone celebration is the Jubilee Gala on Saturday, June 27, 2026: Mass with Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller at 5:00 pm, then the Gala opens at 6:00 pm with dinner (6:30–7:30 pm), mariachis (7:00–8:00 pm), and guest speakers. The parish community is also marking the 18th ordination anniversary of its current pastor, Fr. Juan Carlos Bello Carillo, on Sunday, June 7, 2026 in the Activity Center.
