Holy Name of Jesus Parish (often simply 'Holy Name') is a historic Catholic parish in the Rosedale neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas, belonging to the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. Founded in 1876 as a Mission Church — the first to spring from the original St. Mary's Parish — it has served families in the Southwest Boulevard corridor for nearly 150 years. Today the parish sustains a parochial school (Holy Name of Jesus Catholic School, founded alongside the parish), active liturgical and social ministries, daily and weekly Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and an outreach to the hungry through St. Mary's Food Kitchen. Our History
Holy Name was established in 1876 as a Mission Church — the first church to spring from the original St. Mary's Parish of Kansas City, Kansas. The first Mass in Rosedale was celebrated before 1876 by Father Anton Kuhls in the log house of Richard Fitzgerald. A small frame church was built in 1880 on Kansas City Avenue at Shawnee Street and was destroyed by fire in 1881. In 1897 Rev. Anthony Dornseifer was assigned to convert the mission into a pastorate; he purchased a 60-foot lot behind the church for a school building, moved a $900 house to the southwest side of the church in 1898, and remodeled it as the rectory. He took up residence in 1899, ending Holy Name's days as a mission, and served the parish for 43 years.

Parish Councils
Three councils help guide parish life in an advisory capacity. The Finance Council reviews the parish and school budgets, evaluates major repairs, and projects long-range plans for parish resources. The Pastoral Council, roughly twelve parishioners, cooperates with the Pastor in the apostolic work of the parish and is advisory in nature. The Parish School Council advises the principal, develops school policies, supports implementation of Archdiocesan policies, and helps keep the parish and finance councils informed of school matters; members serve three-year terms.

Liturgical Ministries
Parishioners are invited to serve in many liturgical roles, from distributing the Eucharist to welcoming those who come to Mass, proclaiming the Word, singing in choirs, caring for the sacristy, and keeping the church clean.

Faith Formation & Sacramental Preparation
Holy Name offers lifelong faith formation for children, youth, and adults, including the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) for those seeking to enter the Catholic Church. RCIA follows the four traditional stages: Inquiry/precatechumenate, the Catechumenate (with the Rite of Acceptance), Purification & Enlightenment during Lent (the scrutinies and presentations), and Mystagogy in the Easter season. Children and youth sacramental preparation is offered through the parish's faith formation programs and the parish school.

Social Ministries & Outreach
Holy Name has been actively involved with St. Mary's Food Kitchen in Kansas City, Kansas for many years. The parish prepares and serves meals on the 4th Thursday of each month for those less fortunate. Holy Name was the first church in Kansas City, Kansas to participate in the Hot Lunch Program when it was inaugurated in early 1982, and parishioners continue to provide or cook the food. During the school year, Holy Name School's 8th-grade students join the adults at the Food Kitchen. Holy Name consistently serves the highest number of guests each month.

Holy Name of Jesus Catholic School
Holy Name of Jesus Catholic School, located at 1007 Southwest Blvd, is the parish's educational mission. Its stated mission is 'to praise the holy name of Jesus Christ in all we do through Love of God, Love of Neighbor, and Love of Learning.'
