Holy Name of Jesus Parish is a historic Catholic parish on Cleveland's southeast side, founded in April 1854 when Bishop Amadeus Rappe celebrated the first Mass in the home of the Thomas Byrne family in what was then the city of Newburgh. Located at 8328 Broadway Avenue, the parish has been known by three names in its 170+ year history — Holy Name of Mary, then Holy Rosary, and finally Holy Name of Jesus — and remains the parent community of Cleveland's well-known Holy Name High School (now in Parma Heights). Today it operates as a worshipping parish with an active elementary school, a year-round food ministry, weekly Eucharistic Adoration, and a long legacy of service to the Slavic Village / Broadway neighborhood.

Robert Jasany describes the community as one where 'the love of Jesus is preached and practiced,' and the parish grounds itself in 170+ years of continuous Catholic worship on Broadway Avenue.
History
The parish's roots run to April 1854, when Bishop Amadeus Rappe celebrated Mass at the home of Thomas Byrne in Newburgh (later annexed to Cleveland). Early Masses were also said in the home of Patrick Potts by several visiting priests, including Fathers O'Neill, Walsh, Hannin, Salaun, Martin and O'Callaghan. Lots for a first church were bought in 1860 and the cornerstone was laid in 1862; the parish was first known as Holy Name of Mary, then Holy Rosary, then Holy Name of Jesus after Father Joseph Gallagher formally rededicated the parish and established a Holy Name Society in the 1880s. The present Broadway Avenue church was dedicated on May 22, 1887. From this parish and school grew Holy Name High School, a diocesan institution now in Parma Heights; Holy Name Elementary continues on the original campus.

Outreach & Charity
Two anchor ministries serve neighbors facing food insecurity: a weekly hot-meal program in Haren Hall every Thursday from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. (no take-out; all are welcome), and the St. John Paul II Ozanam Center food distribution. Holy Name Elementary School
Holy Name Elementary has been in continuous operation under various names since 1863, founded by Father Jacob Kuhn, a French missionary priest. Ms. Marcia Hatcher is the current principal. In April 2026 the Joint Pastoral and Finance Councils approved transitioning the school to a Partnership School model — the school remains Holy Name Grade School, with Partnership managing the practical operations to bring additional professional resources to the principal, staff, teachers, and students.

Faith Formation & Sacraments
Daily Mass, weekly confession, and regular Adoration form the backbone of sacramental life at Holy Name. Mass Intentions may be requested in writing (in the collection basket or mailed to the rectory) and are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis with a two-Mass-per-requester, six-month window for Vigil and Sunday Masses.
