History
Holy Ghost Mission was established in 1895 after Father James Beissel designed and oversaw construction of the octagonal church on land donated by the von Tempsky family. Built with labor and cattle auctions from local ranchers, it was dedicated in 1895 and formally blessed by Bishop Ropert Gulstan in 1899. The church was restored in 1991 under Father Michael Owens and completed in 2000 under Father Tom Heinzel. It celebrates its Centennial in 1995 and remains a vibrant parish and tourist attraction.
Architecture & Art
The church’s octagonal design, inspired by Queen Elizabeth’s crown or Charlemagne’s chapel, is unique in Hawaii. The altar and Stations of the Cross, carved by Austrian master Ferdinand Stuflesser and shipped from Europe, are recognized as museum-quality ecclesiastical art.
