History
Catholic life in Oglesby south of the Illinois River dates to the 1880s, when the faithful crossed the river to attend Mass at St. Patrick's in LaSalle. After itinerant priests began celebrating Sunday Mass in Miner's Hall, Bishop of Peoria organized Sacred Heart Parish in 1900 and built a church at Woodland Avenue and Porter Street. A Lithuanian parish, St. Constantine, was later built at Florence and Spring Streets. In 1953, both parishes merged into Holy Family Parish.
