History of Holy Family Parish

The parish traces its roots to 1905, when Holy Family Catholic Church was constructed at 615 S. Copper Street in Deming. As the first Catholic parish in the community, it became the institutional center from which other Deming parishes were eventually founded — most notably Santa Ana Catholic Church in 1918, which grew out of a mission started by Holy Family's own pastor, Rev. Joseph Carnet. Father Carnet traveled to Bishop Anthony J. Schuler in El Paso with $3,000 from the Knights of Columbus of New York to seek approval for a new church south of the railroad tracks to serve the Hispanic community and soldiers stationed at Camp Cody during World War I.
