About Holy Cross (Parish of Holy Cross and St. Luke) · Pickens, South Carolina
Holy Cross Catholic Church is a small Roman Catholic parish in Pickens, South Carolina, that serves the foothill communities of Pickens County alongside its mission church, St. Luke, in nearby Easley. Founded in 1965 and seated in the Greenville Deanery of the Diocese of Charleston, Holy Cross worships in a 250-seat church at 558 Hampton Avenue and is listed as serving roughly 168 households. Under the pastoral care of Fr. James N. Why belong here
Holy Cross and St. Luke is exactly the kind of small, personal parish where the pastor and deacon know most parishioners by name. Worshippers can attend a vigil Mass on Saturday afternoon or evening, two Sunday Masses across both sites, and a weekday Mass almost every day of the week; the parish also offers one of the most-requested devotions — weekly Thursday evening Eucharistic Adoration — along with regular Saturday confession. With a dedicated Director of Religious Education, a Flocknote communications network, an active Knights of Columbus council (#9576), and a men's 'Into the Breach' study, the parish gives Catholics in the Pickens/Easley foothills a real home for sacraments, formation, and fellowship.

Our Story: A 1965 Foothills Parish
Holy Cross was founded in 1965 in the small upstate town of Pickens, where Catholics were a small minority in a largely Protestant region. The diocese lists the parish with 250 seats and approximately 168 registered households. A 2025 obituary for one of the original founding members describes how he and his wife helped build the parish from its earliest days and remained active members of Holy Cross for 60 years, including service in the Knights of Columbus Council #9576. In 1994, to minister to Catholics living south along Highway 86, the parish planted St. Luke Mission in Easley, which now serves roughly 236 households of its own.

Parish Groups & Ministries
The parish website highlights two visible lay initiatives: the long-standing Knights of Columbus Council #9576 (whose members have been part of Holy Cross since the parish's 1965 founding) and the 'Into the Breach' men's study, which the parish promotes with an embedded YouTube video on the home page.
