History
The first Catholic families arrived in Pineville at the beginning of the twentieth century and were served by the pastors of Beckley and Mullens for many years. In 1959, Archbishop Swint gave the people of Pineville and Oceana permission to begin collecting funds for the construction of a church. Three years later, a house was purchased in Pineville for the community to use as a worship space. The first Mass was celebrated in June 1963 and dedicated one month later as the Catholic Mission of the Holy Cross by Bishop Hodges. The community was created as a mission of St. John the Evangelist Church in Mullens and has established itself as a dynamic presence with the ecumenically diverse Wyoming County.
