History of Holy Cross Mission

Holy Cross Mission was built and dedicated in November 1958, during a period of Catholic growth in the rural Sacramento Valley. According to the obituary of Father Thomas P. Delahunty — who served as assistant pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in Maxwell from 1956 to 1960 — he 'was involved in the planning and building of the church at Holy Cross Mission in Arbuckle, which was dedicated in November 1958.' The mission has continued as a dependent worship site of Sacred Heart Parish in Maxwell, following the common rural practice of one parish serving several small communities in the area.
