Parish History
Holy Angels traces its roots to 1958, when Bishop Laurence F. Fitzsimmon of the Diocese of Amarillo purchased 9.4 acres in the College Hills subdivision of San Angelo on June 16 of that year. Within months, regular services began in a multi-purpose gymnasium-auditorium complex blessed on January 22, 1961 by Most Rev. John L. Markovsky, Bishop of Amarillo. The mission was formally erected as Holy Angels Parish on August 1, 1961 with Rev. Raymond Soper, O.F.M., as the first pastor — just two months before Pope John XXIII established the Diocese of San Angelo. A Catholic school opened in fall 1960 and within two decades the congregation had outgrown its gym worship space, leading to a permanent sanctuary dedicated August 15, 1982.
