Good Shepherd's formal incorporation dates to 1997, but Catholic life in the Westfield area is rooted in the broader missionary history of southwestern Wisconsin, including the legacy of Venerable Father Samuel Charles Mazzuchelli, OP, who founded many of the diocese's earliest parishes. For years Good Shepherd shared pastoral care with St. John the Baptist Parish in Montello. In 2023, Bishop Donald J. Hying's annual priest appointments merged Good Shepherd with four other parishes into the new Saint John Henry Newman Pastorate 9.

Since the Diocese of Madison's 2023 priest reassignments, Good Shepherd has been part of a five-parish Catholic community named for Saint John Henry Newman. The pastorate links small-town and rural parishes across Marquette and Columbia counties, sharing clergy, staff, faith formation, a unified bulletin, online giving, and a livestreamed Sunday Mass.
