History
Good Shepherd was founded in 1987 as a mission of St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church in Winston-Salem. That August, Jesuit Father Thomas Gaunt was named pastor of St. Benedict the Moor and its new mission in King, tying the church to the Diocese of Charlotte's historic African-American Catholic community. In 2002 the mission was expanded: the pews were donated by Holy Cross Church in Kernersville, the Stations of the Cross came from St. Benedict the Moor, and the altar was hand-crafted from a fallen tree taken from a parishioner's yard — a signature detail of the renovated worship space. From 1990 onward, the mission also carried on the Hispanic 'migrant ministry' begun at St. Benedict the Moor to support farmworkers in Yadkin County.
