History of Catholic Campus Ministry at Furman
Furman's Catholic Campus Ministry has long been linked with St. Anthony of Padua Church in Greenville, where students have served as lay apostolates. Around 2007, then-pastor Franciscan Father Patrick Tuttle of St. Anthony of Padua — who also served as Furman campus minister — launched a summer program that placed Furman students on the St. Anthony campus in a low-income Greenville neighborhood. Students received a small monthly stipend from the parish and the university, lived in community, prayed together, celebrated Mass together, and ran summer camps for neighborhood children while volunteering at food pantries, hospitals, and immigration services. In 2015, Fr. Jonathan C. Duncan, newly ordained for the Diocese of Charleston, became chaplain, continuing the ministry's combined emphasis on worship, formation, and service.
