History of Catholic Worship at Fort Riley

Catholic life on Fort Riley reaches back to the 19th century. According to an Army.mil historical article, St. Mary's Chapel on Main Post — a small limestone structure — doubled as the post schoolhouse through the 1890s, with chaplains serving as schoolmasters under an 1838 federal mandate. Children of enlisted soldiers learned reading, writing, and arithmetic from the McGuffey Reader in the same rooms that hosted Sunday Mass. By the 1890s, regular transportation to Junction City schools ended that arrangement.

  • St. Mary's Chapel (Main Post) served as both chapel and schoolhouse in the 1880s–1890s
  • Chaplains served as schoolmasters under the Act of 1838
  • Today Victory Chapel (Bldg 2560) hosts major Catholic holy-day liturgies
