History & Heritage

Corpus Christi Parish was established as a mission in 1975 in the St. Augustine Shores community and developed into a full parish beginning in 1977, when Bishop Paul Tanner asked Father William C. Mooney to focus on this growing south St. Augustine community. In its earliest years, the parish was very much on the move: Masses were celebrated in borrowed houses, a converted garage, and the Riverview Club. The parish built its permanent home at 6175 Datil Pepper Road, and Bishop John Snyder dedicated the church on April 30, 1981. Over the next two decades, the parish added an administration building and rectory (1990) and the Marian Hall parish center (2001). Father Mooney shepherded the community for some 40 years before his retirement; he died in February 2025 at age 84, remembered by the Diocese of St. Augustine as a dedicated pastor.
