History & Significance

Cathedral · Est. Parish founded 1896; present co-cathedral dedicated 2008

Sacred Heart Parish was established on November 22, 1896 by Bishop Nicholas A. Gallagher, the third Bishop of Galveston, to serve Houston's growing Catholic population. After Pope John XXIII made Houston an episcopal city in 1959, the parish was elevated to co-cathedral status alongside St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica in Galveston. The present church, begun under Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza in 2005 at a cost of about $49 million, was dedicated on April 2, 2008. It is a co-cathedral of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
