Christ the King Parish in Wakeeney, Kansas, was founded in 1933 by just five Catholic families in a region with few Catholics. History
Founded in 1933 with only five families, the parish began construction of a basement church in 1934 but faced delays due to the Great Depression, Dust Bowl, and WWII. Groundbreaking for a new church began in 1950, and it was dedicated in October 1951 — surviving a tornado that year. A rectory was completed in 1960, a cemetery in 1964, and a religious education center in 1970. Before the basement church, Catholics used Bethlehem Lutheran Church; that debt was repaid in 1968 when the Lutheran church burned, and the Catholic congregation was invited to use Christ the King Church temporarily.
