About Chapel of Divine Love · Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
The Chapel of Divine Love is a Roman Catholic perpetual adoration chapel located at the Convent of Divine Love, 2212 Green Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is the home chapel of the Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters (Sister-Servants of the Holy Spirit of Perpetual Adoration, SSpSAp), the cloistered contemplative community founded by Saint Arnold Janssen in Steyl, Holland, in 1896. Why belong here
The Chapel of Divine Love is one of the rare places in Philadelphia where the public is welcomed into a cloistered convent chapel to pray in the Real Presence of the Eucharist every single day. A Sister is always seated or kneeling before the Blessed Sacrament, so Christ is never alone there; visitors can quietly join that vigil in the beautiful stained-glass interior. Whether you come for the daily 7:00 a.m. Mass, slip in for midday adoration, or stay for the 5:00 p.m. Evening Prayer and Benediction, the chapel offers a genuine haven of peace in the middle of a busy city — a place to slow down, sit in silence, and entrust your prayers to the Sisters who have been interceding for Philadelphia since 1915.

History and Founding (1915)
The chapel was founded in 1915 as the first convent of the Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters outside their Motherhouse. It came about through a confluence of three gifts: the prayerful desire of Mother Mary Michael in Steyl, Holland, to found a second adoration convent; the wish of Archbishop Edmund Francis Prendergast of Philadelphia to bring perpetual adoration to his archdiocese; and a legacy from the Catholic layman Cornelius A. Lane, who had bequeathed funds for an adoration convent. Architect Paul Monaghan drew the plans on May 18, 1914; eight Sisters sailed from Rotterdam in May 1915; and perpetual adoration began on Corpus Christi, June 3, 1915. The community marked its centennial of perpetual adoration in Philadelphia in 2015.
- Corpus Christi, June 3, 1915: Blessed Sacrament solemnly enthroned by Archbishop Prendergast
- Architect: Paul Monaghan (plans dated 5/18/1914)
- Benefactor: Cornelius A. Lane legacy
- Centennial celebrated in 2015
Architecture and Art
The chapel and convent at the southwest corner of 22nd and Green Streets were designed by Philadelphia architect Paul Monaghan and built in 1915. The exterior is adorned with carved relief sculpture, gargoyles, and biblical figures; the chapel entry bears the inscription 'Venite Jesum Adoremus' ('Come, let us adore Jesus'), and the convent entry reads 'Come Holy Spirit. Beneath the shadow of thy wings we dwell.' The interior retains its original 1915 stained glass windows and woodwork, which continue to draw visitors today.
