History of St. Anthony's Hospital
St. Anthony's Hospital traces its roots to 1920, when it opened as Faith Hospital. The facility struggled financially during the Great Depression and closed in 1930. In June 1931, the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany purchased Faith Hospital for $40,000 and renamed it after St. Anthony of Padua, the Franciscan saint known for his selfless dedication to God. It became the first Catholic hospital on Florida's west coast and the founding healthcare ministry of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany in St. Petersburg. Today it is part of BayCare Health System, with approximately 393 beds and around 2,000 team members.

Mass and Liturgical Schedule
Catholic Mass is celebrated in the chapel twice a week, giving patients, families, visitors, and staff the opportunity to receive the Eucharist and pray together in the middle of the day. Outside of these scheduled Masses, the chapel remains open around the clock for personal prayer.

Spiritual Care and Pastoral Services
St. Anthony's Hospital's Spiritual Care department exists because the hospital recognizes spiritual care as an integral and essential part of healthcare delivery. The chaplains have specialized education and training to minister to persons of all faith traditions, including those without any specific affiliation. Because of the hospital's Catholic heritage, a priest is available to administer the Sacraments, and a chaplain remains on-call for emergencies after hours.

Feast of St. Anthony
Each year on June 13, the hospital community celebrates the Feast of St. Anthony, honoring the patron saint of the hospital. St. Anthony of Padua (1195–1231) was born in Lisbon, Portugal, joined the Augustinians as a young man, and later transferred to the Franciscan Order after being inspired by Franciscan missionaries. He became famous as the 'Finder of Lost Things' after a thief, shamed by Anthony's prayer, returned a stolen book. The Franciscan Sisters of Allegany pray that, under St. Anthony's protection, all members of the hospital community may find greatness, peace, and joy in their service to the sick and poor.

Pinellas Hope Medical Respite Program
Since 2009, St. Anthony's Hospital has operated a Medical Respite Program at Pinellas Hope, in partnership with Catholic Charities Diocese of St. Petersburg, BayCare's Morton Plant Mease hospitals, and with grants from Allegany Franciscan Ministries. The program provides 10 small casitas (one-room cottages) where homeless patients who are too medically frail to return to the streets can recuperate and continue receiving care such as wound dressings, IV antibiotics, and daily support. Before discharge, each client is established with a primary-care provider and connected to housing. The program has assisted more than 320 clients and is the only residential medical-respite program of its kind in the Tampa Bay area.

Visiting the Chapel and Contact
The chapel is open 24 hours a day, and the Spiritual Care office is located right next to it on the first floor of the hospital. Patients or family members can request a chaplain visit by asking their nurse to contact the Pastoral Care office. Prayer intentions can also be submitted to the Spiritual Care team.
