History & Significance

Cathedral · Est. Current church built 1890–1903; became a cathedral in 1957

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, Minnesota, is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of New Ulm. The present Neo-Baroque church is the third Holy Trinity built by the German Catholic community: its cornerstone was laid May 4, 1890, the steeple completed in 1893, and interior decoration finished in 1903. When Pope Pius XII established the Diocese of New Ulm on November 18, 1957, Holy Trinity was designated its cathedral, and Alphonse Schladweiler, the first bishop, was consecrated there. It remains an active parish and cathedral church today.
