History & Significance

Cathedral · Est. Parish founded 1906; present church dedicated 1950; cathedral since 1956

Holy Angels Parish was established in 1906 as the first Catholic parish in Gary, Indiana, with early Masses reportedly held in a tavern. The current limestone Gothic Revival church was begun in 1947 and dedicated on January 29, 1950, by Bishop John F. Noll of Fort Wayne. When Pope Pius XII established the Diocese of Gary on December 10, 1956, the church was designated the cathedral, and first bishop Andrew G. Grutka renamed it the Cathedral of the Holy Angels. It remains the seat of the Diocese of Gary and was renovated in 1972 and 1997.
