St. Jude the Apostle Parish was established in St. Petersburg, Florida, by Archbishop Joseph P. Hurley on December 12, 1950, and the present church was solemnly dedicated on Pentecost Sunday, June 2, 1963. When Pope Paul VI created the Diocese of St. Petersburg in 1968, the church was elevated to a cathedral, becoming the seat of the new diocese under its first bishop, Charles Borromeo McLaughlin. The cathedral underwent a major $9 million renovation, rededicated in September 2013, and serves as the mother church of the Diocese of St. Petersburg.
