History & Significance

Cathedral · Est. Present church completed and dedicated in 1915 (parish founded 1906)

St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in Chicago's Ukrainian Village serves the Ukrainian Greek Catholic faithful. The parish was established in 1906 by Ukrainian immigrants, and the present church was completed in 1915 to designs by the Chicago firm Worthmann & Steinbach, modeled after St. Sophia's Cathedral in Kyiv. With the creation of the Eparchy of Saint Nicholas of Chicago on July 14, 1961, the church was elevated to cathedral status as the eparchy's seat. Its interior was renovated by iconographer Boris Makarenko from 1974 to 1977.
