Cathedral of Saint Mary

History & Significance

Cathedral · Est. Dedicated December 19, 1898 (lower church 1891; designated cathedral 1984)

St. Mary's Cathedral, the oldest Catholic parish in the Pikes Peak region (with roots in the first regional Mass in 1860), built its present Gothic Revival church to a design by the firm Pease and Barber; the lower church was completed in 1891 and the upper church dedicated on December 19, 1898. Bell towers were added in 1902 and spires in 1907. When Pope John Paul II established the Diocese of Colorado Springs on November 10, 1983, St. Mary's became its cathedral and the seat of its first bishop, Richard Hanifen. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
