The Cathedral Church of the Sacred Heart in San Angelo, Texas, traces to the area's earliest Catholic community organized after Fort Concho's 1867 founding; a Sacred Heart church was built in 1906 under Father Joseph Hoban. When Pope John XXIII established the Diocese of San Angelo in 1961, Sacred Heart was named its cathedral, with Monsignor Thomas J. Drury as first bishop. The present Modern-style brick cathedral was consecrated on December 21, 1964, and serves as the mother church for Catholic parishes across West Texas.
