History & Significance

Cathedral · Est. Parish established 1927; church dedicated January 20, 1928

Cathedral Chapel of St. Vibiana is a Catholic parish in the Mid-City Wilshire area of Los Angeles, established in 1927 by Bishop (later Archbishop) John J. Cantwell as a "pre-cathedral" while a grand new cathedral was planned (but never built) for the Wilshire district. Ground was broken in September 1927, the first Masses were said on Christmas Day 1927, and Bishop Cantwell formally dedicated the church on January 20, 1928. The parish opened its school in 1930, staffed by the Immaculate Heart Sisters, and continues to serve the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
