History & Significance

Basilica · Est. Built 1869–1886; elevated to minor basilica in 2005

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was commissioned by Jean-Baptiste Lamy, the first Archbishop of Santa Fe, who brought French architects and Italian stonemasons to build it between 1869 and 1886 around the older 1714 adobe parish church (La Parroquia). Archbishop Lamy is buried beneath the sanctuary, where several of his successors also lie. Pope Benedict XVI elevated the cathedral to a minor basilica on October 4, 2005.
