Why belong here

Blessed Sacrament brings the Eucharist to Catholics living and working in Wright and the surrounding coal-mining communities of northeast Wyoming. As a mission served by St. Matthew's Catholic Community in Gillette, it offers a weekly Sunday Mass, Sunday confessions before Mass, and a direct connection to the larger parish family — including St. John Paul II Catholic School, faith formation, and community life — so worshippers in Wright don't have to travel far to live a full Catholic life. It's a small, faithful community rooted in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament from which it takes its name.

Overview of Blessed Sacrament Mission, Wright

Blessed Sacrament Mission is the Catholic worship site for the town of Wright, Wyoming, and the surrounding area in Campbell County. It is one of three mission sites served by St. Matthew's Catholic Community in Gillette, alongside St. Patrick's in Moorcroft and a Mass location in Hulett. The mission offers Sunday Mass at 4:30 PM and confessions beforehand, providing Catholics in Wright with regular access to the sacraments without having to drive to Gillette. As a mission rather than an independent parish, its sacramental life is supplied by the priests of St. Matthew's, and parish registration, faith formation, and school enrollment are coordinated through the main St. Matthew's office.

History of the Catholic Presence in Wright

Catholic ministry in the Gillette–Wright region of northeast Wyoming traces back to 1892, when priests traveling the new railroads out of South Dakota first celebrated Mass in the area. Those scattered mission celebrations grew into the formal establishment of St. Matthew's parish in 1926. As Campbell County's coal and energy industries developed in the twentieth century, Catholic families settled in Wright, and Blessed Sacrament was built there in 1976 to serve the local community. The mission has remained part of St. Matthew's Catholic Community ever since.

  • 1892 – First Masses celebrated in the Gillette area along newly built railway lines from South Dakota.
  • 1926 – St. Matthew's is formally established as a parish in Gillette.
  • 1976 – Blessed Sacrament Mission Church is built on Wright Boulevard in Wright, Wyoming.
  • 1994 – St. Matthew's opens its preschool program (the seed of what becomes St. John Paul II Catholic School).

  • 2026 – St. Matthew's Catholic Community approaches its 100th anniversary.

The school was founded after a feasibility study with The Catholic University of America confirmed sufficient interest, and it began with about 65 students in grades K-6. It now offers a full K-6 Catholic education along with preschool programs, and is led by Principal Vanessa Gemar. Mission families from Wright are among those who have sent their children there for a faith-and-academics education.
