St. Mary of the Angels traces to an 1852 wooden mission church serving railroad workers in Olean, New York. The present Gothic Revival church was built 1913-1917 (cost ~$250,000) under French-trained Cleveland architect Emile M. Ulrich. On February 14, 2017, Pope Francis granted it the title of minor basilica, with a dedication Mass on June 29, 2017 led by Bishop Richard J. Malone. It serves the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo and was the 83rd basilica in the United States.
