History & Significance

The Ave Maria Shrine in Trinidad, Colorado, is a Marian shrine whose present chapel was begun in 1934, built by a group of devout local Catholics known as the Circolo Mariano under the leadership of Rosanna Vecchio. It is associated with a 1908 legend of a doctor saved in a snowstorm after finding a statue of Mary on the hillside. The shrine belongs to the Diocese of Pueblo and is administered by Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, whose pastor serves as its chief administrator.
