Assumption-Guadalupe Catholic Church is a bilingual English/Spanish parish in South Omaha, Nebraska, formed from the merger of three historical parishes: Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and St. Agnes. The parish operates across two church buildings — Assumption Church (ABVM) at 5438 S. 22nd Street and Our Lady of Guadalupe Church (OLG) at 2302 O Street — offering eight weekend Masses and two daily Masses to serve more than 5,800 families. It is part of the Our Lady of the Saints family of parishes under the Archdiocese of Omaha, alongside Ss. Peter and Paul and St. Mary.

About Assumption-Guadalupe Catholic Church
Assumption-Guadalupe is a bilingual parish in South Omaha formed from the union of three historic parishes: Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and St. Agnes. Today the parish worships in two church buildings — Assumption (ABVM) on South 22nd Street and Our Lady of Guadalupe on O Street — and serves more than 5,800 families with a combined 18 weekly Masses in English and Spanish. The parish is part of the Our Lady of the Saints family of parishes within the Archdiocese of Omaha.
Parish History
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was established in 1894, making it one of the oldest parishes in South Omaha and the spiritual home of immigrant communities from Germany, Ireland, the Czech lands, Hungary, Serbia, Poland, Italy, Lithuania, Russia, and Croatia who worked in the stockyards and packing houses. Our Lady of Guadalupe traces its roots to 1919, when South Omaha's Mexican families organized to petition Bishop Jeremiah J. Harty for Spanish-speaking priests; despite diocesan resistance, the Augustinian Recollect fathers (OAR) began ministering, the first chapel opened and closed, then Father Francisco M. Alba reopened the parish in 1928 in a rented storefront at 5027 South 24th Street. The community purchased land at 23rd and N Streets, broke ground in 1950, and dedicated the Guadalupe church in 1951. Over time, St. Agnes was folded in and the three congregations grew into today's unified Assumption-Guadalupe parish, carrying the shared mission: 'born of Assumption, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and St. Agnes Parishes, committed to learning to love God and our neighbor as Christ commanded, going forth into the world, and making disciples of all nations, with Mary as our model and protector.'

The parish's stated mission reads: 'We, the people of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary-Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, born of Assumption, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and St. Agnes Parishes, are committed to learning to love God and our neighbor as Christ commanded, going forth into the world, and making disciples of all nations, with Mary as our model and protector.'

Faith Formation
Faith Formation for Children runs throughout the school year from September through April and prepares children ages 7 to 16 to receive the sacraments of Baptism (if needed), Confession, First Communion, and Confirmation. Catechists provide religious instruction to about 750 students each year. The Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA) begins each fall and concludes at Easter, welcoming adults who are not yet Catholic or Catholics who have not received all of their initial sacraments before age 17.

Sacraments & Sacramental Life
In a recent year the parish celebrated roughly 152 Baptisms, 137 First Holy Communions, 151 Confirmations, 24 weddings, and 37 funerals — evidence of a vibrant sacramental life. Preparation for the sacraments is coordinated through the Faith Formation office, and OCIA is the main entry point for adults seeking Baptism, First Communion, or Confirmation.

Parish Traditions & Annual Events
Two of the parish's most beloved traditions are the Living Way of the Cross, performed each Good Friday, and the three-day Parish Fiesta held in late August (most recently August 22–24, 2025). Both reflect the bilingual, family-oriented character of South Omaha Catholic life.

Assumption-Guadalupe belongs to the Our Lady of the Saints family of parishes, one of 33 Families of Parishes created by the Archdiocese of Omaha's Journey of Faith initiative in 2023. The family also includes St. Mary (3529 Q St.) and Ss. Peter and Paul (5912 S. 36th St.), sharing priests across parishes to build missional, outwardly focused Catholic communities.
