Parish History

The Catholic community of Geneva began as twelve families in the early 1900s who petitioned the Diocese of Cleveland for regular Mass. After travelling priests celebrated Mass in their homes, the community was formally established as Assumption Mission Church on July 7, 1915, under St. Mary Parish in Painesville. Seven years later, on April 27, 1922, the mission grew to 35 families and was raised to parish status. Seven-and-a-half acres were purchased and construction began on the first church, which was completed and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin's Assumption on September 25, 1927. The parish built a school beginning on Ash Wednesday 1953; it opened in September 1957 with more than 150 students taught by the Sisters of the Congregation of the Divine Spirit. By the Golden Jubilee in 1965 the parish had grown to roughly 450 families. The school ultimately closed in June 2015 after a multi-year decline in enrollment. In the 2000s and 2010s the parish upgraded its offices and rectory, received a grand piano, and built an interior chapel for daily Mass. The community marked its 110th anniversary in September 2025.
